It certainly does not prevent litter escaping from the tray, however it has helped my older girl, as she uses it as a step to get in & out of the tray with ease.

This helps contain a bit of extra litter when you have a cat that digs aggressively, however, it doesn't stay on the best (easily knocked off). For the quality, I think it should come with the unit. For this price, I expected something sturdier and better attached. I still use it on my unit, but my husband eventually tosses it aside when changing the bags after it repeatedly falls off.
