The Sherline 8″ Vertical Milling Table offers an alternative method for milling on the Sherline lathe, distinct from the vertical milling column. This accessory allows parts to be mounted on the vertical table, which is then affixed to the lathe crosslide table. The setup enables the part to move past a cutter held in the lathe spindle, providing three axes of cutting similar to a mill, albeit in different directions and with shorter X and Y movements.
While the vertical milling column is generally recommended for milling on a lathe, the vertical milling table can be advantageous for specific setups. It is a versatile fixture that can be used for multiple movements on the mill or as a fixture on other special-purpose machines. This type of setup is often illustrated in hobbyist literature for larger lathes.
The table has undergone improvements over the years, evolving from its original 4-inch length to a 6-inch version, and now to an 8-inch table. This latest version, designed for both CNC and manual applications, features a table extrusion that is 1/4 inch thicker than previous models, enhancing its stiffness. Additionally, it includes an anti-backlash adjustment, along with two T-nuts and hold-down screws for secure operation.
