The Sherline 7.7mm (.3032) WW Collet offers a precise and efficient method for mounting cylindrical parts or bar stock in a lathe, ensuring high centering accuracy. This collet functions as a small, precision 3-jaw chuck that fits into a specially designed tapered adapter within the headstock. A drawbar threads into the collet's backside, drawing it into the adapter, which causes the jaws to close and securely grip the part to be machined. The collet system is renowned for its accuracy, accommodating a small range of diameters with a tolerance of approximately ±.001″ (.02mm).
WW collets are distinct from milling collets due to their through-hole design, allowing stock to pass entirely through. The maximum diameter stock that can pass through is 3/16″ or 4.5mm, although larger collets, known as "pot" chucks, are available. These larger collets are not bored through but are bored to a depth of .260″, which may result in increased runout depending on the setup and part length.
Sherline collets are logically numbered, with inch collets starting with part number 1160 and metric collets with 1178, followed by size indicators. These collets are manufactured to standard WW specifications and are not hardened. It is crucial to verify compatibility with Sherline's adapter and drawbar when using collets from other manufacturers. Sherline also offers a slightly larger adapter and drawbar set to accommodate some other brands of 8 mm collets.
