The Pololu High-Power Motor Driver 36v9 is a discrete MOSFET H-bridge motor driver designed for bidirectional control of a high-power DC brushed motor. This compact board, measuring 1.3 by 0.8 inches, supports a wide voltage range from 5 to 50 volts and can deliver a continuous current of 9 amperes without the need for a heat sink. The driver is engineered to handle large DC brushed motors efficiently, with its performance largely determined by the N-channel MOSFETs that constitute the H-bridge.
The motor driver offers a straightforward interface, requiring minimal input/output lines for operation, and supports both sign-magnitude and locked-antiphase modes. It includes integrated detection for various short-circuit conditions, providing protection against common causes of failure. However, it lacks reverse power protection and over-current or over-temperature safeguards. The board's design facilitates easy connection to motor and control systems, with motor power connections on one side and control connections on the other.
For optimal performance, the motor supply should be capable of delivering high current, and a large capacitor is recommended to be installed close to the driver. The board includes a regulated 5V pin for low-power applications and provides fault detection through FF1 and FF2 pins. The driver can handle PWM frequencies up to 40 kHz, though higher frequencies may increase switching losses.
Note: The board does not include reverse power protection or over-current/over-temperature protection.
