Good Upgrade from Original mBot

I've been using four old mBots while volunteering for grades 7 and 8 classes for a few years. We have lots of hardware, sensors and actuators to play with. mBlock5 with Scratch has performed well, and the hook to Arduino C works great. We've had to replace the motors regularly as accidental drops break the axles, but other than that they've been very reliable.
I purchased three new mBot 2 Neos. They look roughly the same, but are a completely different animal. The cheap DC motors have been replaced with heavier-duty encoder motors, the dual sensor line follower is now a quad RGB sensor, the ultrasonic sensor is better, and Makeblock has included a built-in gyro sensor (yahoo) and a small TFT colour display. Altogether a much improved machine.
mBlock5 still uses Scratch well, but the background code has moved from Ardiuno C to Python. Probably a good move to stay up to date. Unfortunately NONE of the old sensors from the original mBot can be used. Makeblock changed to a daisy-chained sensor system. Better in the long-run because the number of ports is no longer a restriction, but sourcing and implementing devices is now more difficult.
Overall, a much improved product, but availability of sensors, and compatibility with Ardiuno may frustrate many users. That's progress, though! Recommended, especially for new users.
